Based on the Disney – Pixar animated feature of the same name, Up The Video Game takes players on the Nintendo Wii on an exotic adventure with Carl Fredricksen and his young sidekick, Wilderness Explorer Russell, as they set off on a wild journey through the undiscovered jungles of South America. Players will be able to experience all four main characters from the movie — Carl, Russell, Dug the lovable dog or Kevin the prehistoric bird — and will enjoy the action both in a single player campaign and with friends via the game’s 2-4 player multiplayer support.

Playable Characters and Storyline

Carl from 'UP' The Video Game Carl
Carl Fredricksen is not your average hero. He’s a retired balloon salesman, who is forced to leave the house he and his wife built together. But instead of moving into an old folks home, Carl takes action. He ties thousands of balloons to the roof, lifts the house into the air and sets off for South America, fulfilling the promise he made to his wife years before. However, Carl’s plan is challenged by the discovery of a stowaway, the optimistic, overly eager Russell. Carl’s journey tests more than his patience when the duo must survive the extreme weather, treacherous terrain, and strange inhabitants of a lost world – as well as each other.
Russell from 'UP' The Video Game Russell
Russell is an enthusiastic and persistent 8-year-old Junior Wilderness Explorer. Armed with a backpack laden with gear, he is ready for the wilderness. The problem is that he’s never actually left the city. All his knowledge of the outdoors comes from books, and his sole camping experience was in his own living room. He’s just one “Assisting the Elderly” badge shy of achieving his lifetime goal: Senior Wilderness Explorer. When he targets Carl Fredricksen as the elder he will assist, Russell ends up as an unwitting stowaway on Carl’s porch when the house takes flight and finds himself on the true outdoor adventure he’s been dreaming about.
Kevin from 'UP' The Video Game Kevin
Named “Kevin” by Russell, this extremely rare, 13-foot-tall flightless bird is hidden from the world in its remote Paradise Falls habitat. Kevin is exceptionally fast and nimble despite its size. In fact, the massive bird often gets into some very curious and seemingly impossible positions. Very few know that this scientifically valuable creature exists, but Carl and Russell stumble upon the bird, which Russell names Kevin after he discovers they share a sweet tooth. Kevin and Russell bond instantly, and despite the bird’s propensity to swallow Carl’s walker, Kevin joins the jungle’s most unlikely pack, along with Carl, Russell and Dug.
Dug from 'UP' The Video Game Dug
Dug is a lovable golden mutt living in the wilds of Paradise Falls as part of the dog pack searching for the rare, flightless bird. Like the rest of his pack, Dug is outfitted with a remarkable high-tech collar that translates his thoughts into speech. But Dug is mocked as the nerd of the pack. Sent into the jungle on a “special” mission, Dug accidentally succeeds when he discovers the bird following Carl and Russell. As they’re pursued through the jungle by his own pack, the sweet, but simple-minded Dug must decide to which pack he actually belongs.

My daughter is 5 is ABSOLUTELY LOVES this game. True, the flying parts are difficult and I end up flying (and I am NOT a gamer) while she plays the player two option and helps shoot down the planes. My daughter does play the game by herself after we get past the airplanes. The nice part about this game and no one dies – they show the dog flying away attached to a balloon or Kevin and Carl getting away from the bad guy before the games resets. The game teaches players that they have to play together to win as you can not move to the next scene without the other player – helping the other player over a wall or pulling Carl up with a rope. The first few scenes of the game show help hints using monkeys to get passed an obstacle such as Carl and Russell helping each other up a cliff or Russell lowering a rope to Carl to climb up the cliff. Graphics are awesome and the characters talk to each other throughout the game. She has won the game four times (the fourth about 5 minutes ago) and she keeps on wanting to play again and again. BEST GAME EVER to show kids teamwork with minimal violence, great music, great graphics. Love IT!

One quick update – my daughter is not a wii snob as the only other game she’s been able to play without difficulty is MarioKart and that’s b/c of the wheel and the option to attach it to a table with the add on hardware. This is the first game she’s been able to use and learn to use the nunchuk. She wouldn’t play the Disney Princess game b/c she couldn’t figure out the nunchuk. She is now teaching my wife how to play and even takes her controller to show her. She’s tried to do the biplane parts by heself but its hard for her to keep the plane level while firing so I still do these scenes for her.

I, too, rented this game before chunking out $[...] for it. As mentioned above, the biplane battle is freakishly hard…even for parents! After you defeat that, if you arent so angry and frustrated and want to quit, it gets fun. My 6yo and 4yo play together and it helps with reading, teamwork and problem solving.

I agree, it should not be this hard to play for a kids game. They got to level 2 last night, then had to start over this morning with the stupid planes and do the levels over. lame lame lame.

I am glad i rented it, and love watching them play together. I doubt i will purchase it at least until the price goes down.

Parts of the game are fun, and the minigames are fun, but also freakishly hard. It just has some design flaws, as noted by previous reviewers.

I purchased this game for my 6 year old son after seeing a commercial for it on TV. It seemed like a fun, easy game that children of all ages could play.

About 5 minutes after putting it into the Wii, my son had to hand the remote to my husband because the game was too difficult. Turns out my husband had a tough time with it as well. The part where you’re flying and trying to shoot down the other aircrafts is very hard for younger kids.

There are a few parts where my son could go forth by himself, but with great aggrivation.

The UP game is now sitting on the shelf, after an hour of play time. And neither my son, nor my husband have any incling to pull it back out.

I would definately not reccomend this game to anyone.

I did, however, give it 2 stars, as the graphics are very good and the characters have a good sense of humor when they speak.

My almost 5-year-old is in love with this game. However, I was hoping that it would be one that she could be fairly independent with. The reasoning skill that is required for this game does not match the age group in which the movie itself was intended for. The airplanes are very difficult for her. I had to get through that level, which also happens to be the first level. The snake part (I think level 4 or 5) is even more difficult. She gave up immediately. I tried several times to do it myself, but had to walk away out of frustration. Ultimately, we had to put it in two-player mode and my husband and I eventually got through it. Overall, it is a funny and cute game. We got the Wii over Christmas and this has been the only game so far that she just insists upon playing nonstop.

I bought this for my 8 year old son and he likes it. I wouldn’t say it is his favorite game, but he has had a good time playing it.
